The Ramayana states that after the death of King Ravana, King Vibhishana was crowned by Lakshmana. So Kelaniya is the place where Vibhishana reigned. The reason Lakshmana crowned Vibhishana in Kelaniya was because Rama had to return to India as he had to continue his self-exile of 14 years to honor the commitment to his father, King Dasarath of Ayodhya. Therefore, Kelaniya Buddhist Temple is also considered an important site on the Ramayana tour of Sri Lanka. Along the way, stop by the Panchamuga Anjaneyar Temple, a Sri Lankan temple dedicated to Anjaneyar. This is the only temple in the world to have a chariot of Anjaneyar.
